Word of the Month

Every month we give the students an assignment on the word of the month and discuss it in class. When the student brings the assignment back to class completed, they will get a stripe on their belt!

 

Please discuss and review the word of the month at home.




The word of the month for September is RESPECT.

Showing "Respect" means understanding the value of a place, object & most importantly other people.

The act of "Respect" is having regard for the inherit rights & priviledges of all and in doing so showing consideration, courtesy & kindness.  It is imperative that as individuals we live in a way that warrants being respected by others as well.  A major component of the discipline of martial arts incorporates the practice of respect of the student's instructors, parents & peers as well as teaching the importance of respecting & valuing self. 
  

The word of the month for August is GENEROSITY.
"If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path."- Buddhist saying.

Generosity means adopting a lifetime habit of sharing with others our Time (the hours devoted to helping others), Talents (the special skills given to enrich the lives of others) & Treasures (those valuable things that will help other people thrive & survive) to make their daily lives better.  It is proven that people who give lead much happier lives overall. A great way to reinforce generous behavior in children is to model for them your own generosity often on a daily basis.


The word of the month for
July is DETERMINATION.

Determination means "The act of having & carrying out a firm intention to achieve a particular goal or outcome".

When we are determined, we are committing ourselves fully in focusing on a desired outcome through hard work, study & discipline.  In martial arts, students are encouraged to challenge themselves at a high standard & strive for their best potential which will ultimately help them perform successfully in all of their life's chosen goals.  


The word of the month for
June is HONESTY.

Honesty means “I am truthful, honorable & fair.”

When we are honest, we are acting in a consistently truthful way.

Showing honest behavior reflects on our integrity & character as a human being and our understanding of moral rights & wrongs. When a person is "honest", they do not lie, cheat or deceive out of respect for others.


Practicing martial arts is a positive technique to help shape & sharpen character skills through physical fitness & self-discipline.



The word of the month for May is COMPASSION
.
Compassion means "I care and feel concern for someone."

When we have compassion for someone, we recognize that they are in pain emotionally or physically and find ways to help.  Showing compassion means that we:


1. Have respect for & value the feelings of others.
2. Demonstrate selflessness to be better citizens in community with others.
3. Can quickly respond when people are in need.


The practice of martial arts is a positive tool to reinforce self-discipline and develop compassion constructively to help others.
 


The word of the month for April is GRATITUDE
.

Gratitude means “I’m so thankful!”

When we thank someone, we are showing “gratitude.”

 

Gratitude is appreciating, recognizing, and being thankful for what you have.  Showing gratitude means that we:

(1) Appreciate the people, things, and opportunities we have (our parents, our school, our activities)

(2) Recognize and take notice of these great people, things, and opportunities so that they know we value them

(3) Show thanks for these people, things, and opportunities.

 

When we appreciate, recognize, and show thanks for what we have, we are showing gratitude.

 

 

The word of the month for March is SELF RELIANCE.

Self Reliance means “I can do it by myself!”.  When we rely on ourselves and we have a “can do attitude” we’re showing self reliance.

 

Self-reliance in many ways, is self trust. It’s the ability to rely on our own powers, judgments, and abilities.

 

The word of the month for February is SELF-DISCIPLINE.

Self-discipline is doing what you are supposed to (getting the job done), even when you don’t feel like it. It is a great lesson for the young students and a good reminder for us as adults.

 

Self-discipline is what makes us achieve our goals at home, at school (or work) and in martial arts!
